Greetings from CIO magazine’s Perspectives event in Atlanta. CIO puts on these one-day events in a number of cities across the country, and they are a great way to learn a whole lot in a mere eight hours.

We heard from Kevin Kern, EVP and CTO, Global Operations and Technology for First Data on how his IT organization is moving from cutting costs to driving revenue, Dave Webb, CIO of Equifax about the future of big data, and Doug Haugh, President of Mansfield Oil Company, about his path from CIO to company president. I ran a panel on cloud, mobility, and consumerization, where my panelists were kind enough to put up with my attempts at humor as they answered my questions about their approach to managing increased business demand.

Next up is San Francisco, in May.  Hope to see many of you there!

Martha

1. Movers and Shakers: Call for News!

Each month, I write Movers and Shakers, a blog on CIO.com that chronicles the career moves of CIOs, and I rely heavily on my CIO networks to keep me in the loop. If you know of a CIO who has retired, been promoted, or moved into a new role (including yourself, of course), please send an email to communications@hellersearch.com. We’ll include the announcement in our next Movers and Shakers installment.

The CIO Paradox book cover2. The CIO Paradox Manuscript is Done! Read an excerpt from the final chapter

I am delighted to report that my manuscript for The CIO Paradox: Battling the Contradictions of IT Leadership is my editor’s problem now. While she works her editorial magic, I offer herewith an unedited excerpt from the final chapter, "Breaking the Paradox." Also, the book is up on amazon.com, so feel free to reserve a copy. (The book will be published in the fall.)

3. Featured Blog: The Storyteller CIO

Arun Gupta, Group CTO for Shoppers Stop in Mumbai India, writes a great blog all about CIOs. Here is his latest, on the fine art of storytelling.

4. Leadership Opportunity: Online University Seeks IT Industry Council Members

mortarboardWe have been contacted by a national, non-profit online university looking for CIO's to serve on its IT industry program council. The members of this council define the competencies that BS and MS graduates should have upon graduation. The university then translates these competencies into learning objectives and assessments. If would like to influence the direction of this university's IT degree programs, please send an email to communications@hellersearch.com.
