World’s Largest, Astronomy-Changing Camera, Debuts

The first public images from the world’s largest camera, in an observatory on a Chilean mountaintop, are due this week. The camera, called the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, is the centerpiece of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a project of the National Science Foundation and U.S. Energy Department, reported ZME Science. The 3,200-megapixel camera, which can spot a golf ball from 15 miles away, is equipped with a lens that is 1.57 meters wide. Behind it are 189 charge-coupled device sensors that capture images by converting photons to electrons. The camera is designed to take 1,000 exposures of a 3.5-degree swath of sky every night.
