IBM Announces Advance in Quantum Computer Quest

IBM announced a new computing architecture that advances the goal of building a large fault-tolerant quantum computer. The design reduces the number of qubits (the quantum equivalent of bits) required to detect errors, IEEE Spectrum reports. IBM hopes to bring the computer called Starling to market in 2029. “Because of the inherent unreliability of the qubits that quantum computers are built from, error correction will be crucial for building reliable, large-scale devices,” the publication noted. While engineering challenges remain, the innovation has the potential to enable quantum computers to solve practical problems, Mark Horvath of Gartner told IEEE Spectrum.
