In their quest to deliver value from AI investments, the best CIOs know how to navigate the C-suite and boardroom. But does the boardroom know how to navigate AI?

That's a question I'm hearing constantly now – and the answers vary dramatically across organizations. Some boards are panic-spending on AI without clear metrics, while others are stalling innovation out of excessive caution. This leaves CIOs in "the messy middle" – caught between unrealistic expectations from above and organizational resistance from below.

That's why I'm excited to share insights from my friend Dan Roberts, host of the "Tech Whisperers" podcast, who recently spoke with three former CIOs who now serve as board members. Their key message: experienced CIOs bring essential business context, strategic perspective, and risk management expertise that boards desperately need to move beyond stalled AI initiatives toward profitable, scalable outcomes.

The World’s Smartest City Is a Tiny German Village

The digital grassroots run deep in Etteln, a town of 1,750 residents in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. An online petition saved a school from closure. Locals marshalled equipment to dig trenches to connect remote neighbors to fiberoptic cable. Residents can use a free ride-share app for the village’s electric car. And, most impressively, reports Reasons to Be Cheerful, a digital twin of the town that collects useful data and earned the village top honors in the IEEE Smart Cities Contest (ahead of Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore). The town has used the 3D model to evaluate the safety of proposed homes that could be at risk of flood damage, among other applications.
