Tech exec titles are proliferating, but this month’s appointments make one thing clear: measurable business impact matters most. Whether the title is CIO, CTO, CDO, or some combo of them all, boards are gravitating toward leaders who can point to outcomes, not just experience.

Nationwide’s new CTO, Michael Carrel, was recognized for the technology platforms he built across the company’s financial services businesses. Former Nationwide CTO Jim Fowler, now at Lumen, was highlighted for modernizing core systems and scaling intelligent automation. Starbucks pointed to Anand Varadarajan’s work leading technology and supply chain for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores. Goodyear emphasized Raman Mehta’s enterprise-wide digital transformation achievements, and 1-800-FLOWERS cited Alex Zelikovsky’s IT transformations that drove business turnarounds and profit growth.

Across all 12 appointments, the message is consistent: leaders who can demonstrate tangible outcomes rise to the top.
