This month's appointments tell an encouraging story about promoting from within.

We're seeing organizations elevate their own IT leaders to CIO—Trellix promoted Randy Doherty from VP of global infrastructure, Kratos Defense elevated Brian Shepard from VP of IT, and Bridge Specialty Group appointed Steve Emmons from another division within their parent company.

These moves reward proven talent while building critical continuity. Internal promotions mean leaders who already understand the culture, challenges, and political landscape—and can hit the ground running on complex technology strategies.

Congratulations to all of October’s new tech leaders!

Also in this edition: Joe Topinka and Saurabh Shah present an AI decision-making framework; and researchers warn of “workslop”—poor-quality generative AI output draining productivity.

Beware AI-Generated “Workslop”

clock

Generative AI is so easy to use that sharing its results at work without careful thought can harm an organization’s productivity, researchers from Stanford University and BetterUp Labs write in Harvard Business Review. Poorly crafted GenAI results produce what the researchers call “workslop” that clogs colleagues’ inboxes. Their survey found “41% of workers have encountered such AI-generated output, costing nearly two hours of rework per instance and creating downstream productivity, trust, and collaboration issues.” It’s the job of leaders “to develop guidance for employees to help them use this new technology in ways that best align to the organization’s strategy, values, and vision.”
