The WSJ’s report this week that Moderna has a new chief people and digital technology offer, to lead a merged IT/HR organization, demonstrates today’s rapid blurring of these traditionally separate functions. The heart of ROI AI will take place in the workforce, so moving technology closer to people makes good sense.  Our new CIOs for May might not be running HR, but their focus on the tech in the workforce will be acute.

This month’s CIO appointments include plenty of F500 with insurance, healthcare, and financial services seeing some change:

Health care giant Humana ($115 in revenues, No. 38 on the list) appointed Japan Mehta, former chief data officer at Citi, to be its new CIO. The Hartford, the major insurance company ($26 billion, No. 166) named Shekar Pannala, previously global CIO at Chubb, to be CIO. And Genworth, the long-term care provider ($7 billion, No. 477), tapped Morris Taylor, the former CIO at Markel, as its new CIO.

Congratulations and best wishes to all those starting new roles.

But to achieve the promise of these technologies calls for more than buying these tools, writes Martha Heller in Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “They need the vision to build strong AI foundations and streamlined processes, the governance to manage a potentially limitless horizon of new ideas, and a board that understands that the AI world will be different.”

Agatha Christie

For those of you who want to craft the perfect mystery story, the BBC has the close-to-perfect teacher: a facsimile of Agatha Christie. In an AI-era plot twist, a hybrid creation – an actress accompanied by a simulated voice – stands in for the late Dame Agatha, author of Murder on the Orient Express and many other titles. The creators used “AI-enhanced technology, licensed images, and carefully restored audio recordings” to capture “the essence of Agatha Christie’s presence and voice,” to share lessons on the art of suspense and red herrings, according to an announcement by BBC Maestro.
