In defining a new set of CIO attributes, I have recently added "Value Architect" to the list: the leader who works with finance counterparts, among others, to redesign traditional enterprise value metrics for our brave new AI world.

But this is a heavy lift which requires serious data on IT spend and value.

That's why I'm partnering with Dr. Howard Rubin and The Technology Economists on a five-minute survey asking: Are we measuring technology in a way that reflects its true impact on organizational performance? Rubin, one of the world's foremost authorities on technology value measurement, designed the survey, and every qualified respondent will receive a copy of the results.

Also in this edition: our June roundup of C-suite tech appointments led by Citigroup's new CIO; CM Law Technology Practice Chair Reiko Feaver with governance advice for agentic AI; and a data visualization about the most popular bird searches on Google.

survey

In a world shaped by rapid digital acceleration and AI, many organizations still rely on management measures that do not fully capture IT value. A new survey from The Technology Economists asks: Are we measuring technology in a way that reflects its true impact on organizational performance? The five-minute survey collects anonymized responses from C-level executives, senior business, technology and government leaders, and technology, finance and operations professionals on questions about the metrics your organization uses and your perspective on whether they capture technology’s value. Qualified respondents will receive a copy of the results.

Why Your AI Governance Won't Work for Agents

Reiko Feaver 216

Agentic AI isn't just a faster version of the AI you've been governing. Agents’ ability to act on their own makes them fundamentally different—and opens up enterprises to fresh risks and calls for fresh approaches to governance, argues CM Law Technology Practice Chair Reiko Feaver. “CIOs deploying agentic AI need to understand why their existing governance falls short and what shifts will close a potential risk-management gap before an incident forces them to,” Feaver writes.

And now, thanks to Searching for Birds, a project by Nadieh Brember and the design firm Visual Cinnamon, birding enthusiasts can tell which birds are most popular for searchers across the U.S. (bald eagle is No. 1) and in every state.
